In a cruel twist of the now world-famous motto that “a dog is for life”, a pair of Dachshund puppies were found abandoned inside a type of reusable shopping bag often referred to as a ‘Bag for Life’.
The puppies, a tan and dappled pair who are believed to have been sisters and under six months of age, were found in March in a supermarket car park in Essex by a member of the public. They were quickly rescued and taken to Dogs Trust Basildon, were named Bunny and Blossom.
Despite prompt care, Blossom soon became poorly with parvovirus, and the tiny Dachshund puppy passed away within four days. Bunny also had the virus, but she responded well to care and is on the way to recovery.
Lisa Cooper, Dogs Trust Basildon Rehoming Centre Manager, said, “These poor puppies were in a sorry state when they came to us. I dread to think what they had already been through in their short lives, and what could have happened to them if they hadn’t been found and handed in by a quick-thinking member of the public.
“It’s absolutely devastating that little Blossom didn’t make it, but thankfully we were able to change the tale for Bunny and she is very much on the mend, with her personality starting to shine through in the foster home where she is being cared for.
“Despite her ordeal, Bunny has been thriving and is a very sweet, cuddly and playful girl.”
