A drone attack has taken place in the Russian city of Sochi, while President Vladimir Putin was reportedly in the city.
Veniamin Kondratyev, Governor of Krasnodar Region (Russia), said on September 9 that one person was killed in a Ukrainian drone attack overnight in the city of Sochi in the region.
Debris from Ukraine fell on the car the victim was driving. In addition, the attack damaged six other houses, according to TASS.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced that the country’s air defense forces destroyed two UAVs in Krasnodar out of a total of 31 intercepted overnight.
According to The Kyiv Independent, the attack coincided with President Vladimir Putin’s working visit to Sochi. Putin attended the online BRICS summit from Sochi on September 8.
Russia’s independent media outlet Agentstvo reported that a presidential Il-96-300PU was still parked at the airport in Sochi when the attack occurred.
President Putin owns the Bocharov Ruchey seaside residence in Sochi but is said to have visited the city less frequently since Ukraine began attacking it with UAVs.
Sochi is on the Black Sea coast and is about 310 km (190 miles) from Ukraine and 538 km (330 miles) from the Ukrainian-controlled part of Zaporizhzhia.
Ukraine has not commented on the attack. It often targets military and energy infrastructure that support Russian military operations.
